Anxiety and Trusting (and May Photo a Day)

"Frustration is the by-product of attempting to fulfill responsibilities God does not intend for us to carry. Freedom, joy, and fruitfulness come from seeking to determine God's priorities for each season of life, and then setting out to fulfill those priorities, in the power of His Spirit, realizing that He has provided the necessary time and abilities to do everything that He has called us to do." Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, page 120

What truth!

Recently Pastor Greg said something in a sermon that was very interesting to me. He said something along the lines (since I don’t have my notes on me) that anxiety is what we feel when we aren’t trusting God. Anxiety is what it feels like to live life as the one in control.

I am a planner. I like to dream big and then make plans to get to those big places. I am smart and determined. These things could get me most places. I’ve learned though that the best places for me to be in, are the places that God has orchestrated for me to be in. So when I plan, I do so with a heart that says “Lord, feel free to change anything here – these plans are not set in stone, unless they line up with your will.” I rarely get upset when things turn out differently than planned, because at every turn God has been SHOCKING me with how much more awesome His plans are for my life. So really, it’s just a win.

I can tell though when I start to try to get control…when I start thinking my plans need to happen the way I want them to. My heart starts to harden. Anxiety comes quickly. I am less gracious to others, because “the plan” and working towards “the plan” becomes all consuming.

As Paul and I are setting off on our big adventure, I have had to plan a lot. I have tried to do this with a heart towards God’s plans for us. We have been hit with setbacks and plan changes, and I have worked to move through them all turned towards God and with a gracious, peaceful spirit. I have done this to varying degrees of success.

This week was a harder week.

Now I know, or at least I feel strongly, that Paul and I are supposed to be in Nashville this summer at the school of ministry. This is a time for us for 7 weeks to grow in Christ, to learn in Christ and to grow together. I also have felt like God was giving us an opportunity to have an adventure around a country that He created – God made America beautiful and I cannot wait to experience this beauty with Paul!

As we looked at the idea of this trip a year and a half ago (wow – we’ve been planning for a while) we knew that unless God was orchestrating for us to go, that it would never happen. And here we are, a week from departure with 98% of things in place and finances resolved. It has been a miracle to get here.

And yet, as the saga of the search for subletters continues, I find my heart forgetting His previous provision, and I find myself stressing about it. How short sighted or forgetful am I? Has the Lord not provided EVERYTHING to get us here? And yet I worry. I stress.

In another recent sermon Pastor Greg talked about the difference of moving forward in our own control, or with a heart that trusts Jesus. He said that often the actions of both parties would look the same but it is the spirit in which moving forward happens – and yes, the actions taken in response to that. He used Judah (Joseph’s brother) and Joseph as examples – he contrasted their lives and how Judah worked to do solve problems and how Joseph responded to God to see problems solved.

That is who I want to be. When problems arise, I want to respond to them guided by God, and out of a place of peace and relationship with Christ. I don’t want to strive and work to make things go my way.

So I have an ad on Craigslist, I have viewings set up with people for our place and through it all I will trust that ultimately GOD IS IN CONTROL. That He is the provider and that He “has my back”

Of countdowns, bike riding and thai curry

Count down to:
Paul’s return: 4 days
Our big departure: 7 ½ days
Church Services & Lifegroup remaining: 1!
So weird to think it will be September before I’m at church or Lifegroup again.
CRAZY.

Left to do:
Resort through clothes packed for Nashville and purge once more
Take clothes for donation to donation center
Sort through and purge freezer
Talk to Rogers about what to do with our phones for the summer
BCAA – renew membership up in July and extend medical coverage through summer
Defrost Freezer
Clean house to subletting standards
Pack Camping gear
Plan & Make Travel food

I’m sure there’s more but man, with so much on my mind I can’t remember currently.

It has been such a blessing to still be riding my bike. The views in Vancouver are gorgeous, the weight loss from the exercise is still happening (another pound, yippee!) and commuting on your bike is free. It is win win win.

Every morning as I bike I am faced with gorgeous moments, or scenes. I always wish I could pull over and take a picture…but it would look like all the other pictures I’ve already posted of this gorgeous city. And you wouldn’t feel the sun on my face or the wind in my helmet…so you will just have to get your bike out and ride from the top of Queen E, down Cambie and over the Cambie Street Bridge into downtown and then you will experience a simply lovely commute.

Also…today my boss bought me lunch. Possibly because I’m leaving in a week and she will miss me and possibly just because she is lovely. I’m not certain on which it is. But both are possible for sure.

Thai yellow chicken curry.
Soooo good.

Trip Anticipation

I currently feel ready to EXPLODE.
Like for real.
I am so excited for our summer.
I've been working on our itinerary and it's RAD
Like, really rad.

The red is our trip there.
We have 10 days to make it.
The blue is the trip home.
We have just under a month to make it.
Yippee!

My parents raised me on road trips and adventures. So this is not only something I expect to do in life, but also something I so enjoy. And it's something that Paul and I have had fun doing together - we haven't been farther than Calgary, Portland or Tofino together but I feel good about our ability to travel for so long.

We'll be hitting up 20 States together, we will drive for about 155 hours, and we will see many "must see" attractions across America.

CANNOT WAIT.
America - here we come!...on June 1st, that is.

In my excitment I need to remember to calm down and finish packing up my house. I have a subletters viewing tonight, to hopefully nail down the people we'll chose to stay at our place. I have many different businesses to stop into and solve things (BCAA for travel insurance and Road side assistance renewal, Rogers for phone plan ideas, etc). Busy times between now and our leaving.

And on top of the excitment for the road trip there's the anticipation for 7 weeks of school - 7 weeks dedicated to growing in our faith, our leadership skills and our calling as a couple. 7 weeks to be together, to pray together, to think together....to excite passions in our hearts for Vancouver and for the coming year here. AND at the end of the summer at week in Calgary at the Every Nation Harvest Institute there.

This will be an awesome summer of growth for sure!

Phew.

Nelson/Kaslo Trip

Warning: this is a very picture heavy post.

Last weekend I went with my dear friend Jodi to Neslon, BC.
We were heading the 9 hour drive to help our dear friend Sarah with her sister, Michelle's wedding.
Also Paul is working away in Kaslo (45 minutes away) so it was a win win.

The drive went faster than expected and the views were wicked awesome.
And we only made 4 stops - timmies x2, gas & DQ

Friday we got up early to make pompoms and run errands with Sarah.
We did some set up at the hall and worked to figure out how to hide the carpeted walls and cloud ceiling mural.
Yes. For real.

Ready to view the hall and keep on working!

Paul joined us late that night.
I woke up early and made breakfast for everyone

Saturday was filled with more wedding prep, more gorgeous views, another subway run, and then the wedding itself!

The Hall

With cloud mural

Gorgeous!

Friends. So glad to help this lovely lady out!

Then we headed to the reception where we were the dj's, bartenders and general clean up crew.
Busy night but lots of fun.

DJ'ing

Such power.

And onto the bartending.

I love a well stocked fridge.

Red Solo Cup!
I fill you up!
Lets have a party!

Paul and Jodi - 2 of the 3 team awesome members.

Paul and me - the rest of the team.
From our bartending station

Sunday I woke up in Kaslo with Paul.
Breakfast and coffee on the porch facing the lake.
Genius.

Then I headed back to Nelson to get Jodi.
Thus began the 8 hour journey back.
With many more breathtaking views.

Gorgeous again.

Add those views with:
> a sweet reunion with my lovely husband
> a catch up with old friends at a cozy bar
> an opportunity to bless the socks off one lovely lady
(Sarah's that's you!)
> 14+ hours of amazing conversation with Jodi
(thus cementing our friendship and drawing us so much closer - and teaching us that we both love moody music)
> two new scarves!

Pretty sweet weekend.
For real.
